    Woolsery Blind Drop, 2012
    Woolsery YFC Blind Drop
Woolsery Blind Drop was thoroughly enjoyable, they started at Westcountry inn at half 7.There were 16 teams all together. They got taken out in a pickup or van! We got dropped and had 2 go to at least two checkpoints where you had to do different challenges including: find a certain number of tools and do a human pyramid in the road and lift the heaviest member on the team up for 10 seconds.  The new challenges that they put in were good but we thought that the old format was better. Buckland A won.The whole of the Shebbear YFC team had a lot of fun and we will be attending next year because we all had a good time.

    National Cookery Competition (Malvern Show)
After competing at Devon County Show, where we came first, we were put through to nationals. With an early start and a 3 hour drive up to Malvern show where 63 teams had entered. After an hour of cooking, and a nervous wait whilst the judges marked the dishes we came 26th out of 63  made up of teams of 3. Well done Jolie Cleave (U16) Lisa Pinno (U26) and Jackie Curtis (U21).

    Farm Business Competition
In 2010, Lisa Pinno and Emily Wallinder entered the farm business and came first! They advanced to the nationals unfortunately they weren't placed. In 2011 they decided to enter again coming 3rd! Well done girls, good luck for next year!

The young farmer tent was organised by Shebbear, Bradworthy, Clawton and Stratton, and for once the sun was shining. Jackie Curtis got 1st for Flower Arranging and 3rd for her Raspberry Muffins. We also took part in the lawn mower racing and after a minor set back in the time trials, racing continued and we then went in to the main ring to come 3rd overall.

    Cider Visit (Part 1)
This was an enjoyable visit to West Lakes Apple and Cider Farm, we had a look at there orchards in which they get their apples from for their apple juices, ciders and cider vinegars. We also took a look at how they turn the apples in to the finished products and how they package them ready for retail sale. We even got a few tasters! We will be returning in again to see the factory in action.

    Devon County Show

    Picture
This year we decided to enter a few of the classes, including the club cubicle, stock judging, layered jelly, flower arranging and chocolate crispies. Jackie Curtis won first for the layered jelly and Ben Hutchings got second place in the junior Stock Judging. On Saturday Jackie Curtis and Lisa Pinno took part in the ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’ competition in which they cooked a main and desert in 30 minutes for under £10, which they took first prize for, as well as that they have been put through to compete at national level, where they will have to cook 4 courses in an hour with another member from the club. Well done to the other members that entered.

    Speaking Competitions

    Picture
    Helping hand from Battledown Contractors
Speaking competitions aren’t for everyone but when Ben Hutchings first took part in a speaking competition he realised that not only did he enjoy public speaking but that he was successful in the competitions, getting through to county on many occasions. However this time the Senior Brainstrust team got 4th at group round. This year we took part in a lot more speaking competitions than previous years and its paid off! Senior Just A Minute we got 4th, with Joey Curtis going through to County round. Group Intermediate Brainstrust mixed team with Clawton- 3rd with Chloe Wonnacott going through to County. Unfortunately we weren't placed at Call My Bluff. Well done to all those that took part in all the competitions.

    X-mas Challenge; Games Night
This was a popular night with the Tarka Group and we had a good turnout from the other clubs. With the chairs cooking skills put to the test as she prepared some unusual recipes, including sardine milkshake! Some of the more daring members followed up the milkshake with meal worms!

    Dodgeball
Ben Hutchings attended this event getting through to county unfortunately even though the team was only beaten once they didn’t make it through to the next round.

    Pool, Skittles, Darts
This was a good night, but think we need some more practice! Results were Girls Pool 5th, Boys Pool 4th, Mixed Pool 4th, Double Darts 5th and Single Darts 3rd.

    Helping the Community
We got our shovels and started to dig, around the stumps that had become unsafe in the playing fields. After the first two we were well on our way, least we thought we were until we came to the one on the end.  There was a lot more concrete, luckily Matt Dymond from Battledown Contractors was on hand with his tractor! 16 stumps later they were all out!

    Carnivals
We attended 3 carnivals in 2010, Dolton, Hatherleigh and Holsworthy. Our theme was ‘Where’s Wally?’ and after a few weeks of getting the float ready we got dressed up in our red and white stripes! At Dolton we got 2nd and Hatherleigh we got 5th! Thanks goes to Nick Ley for letting us use his shed to build the carnival float in.
